How the free scheme works
Until recently, Oxford charged per item for bulky collections — £22 for furniture and £33 for large electricals and white goods. In its February 2026 budget the council allocated around £102,000 a year to make the service free for all Oxford residents. The allowance: two free collections per property, up to three items each, in any rolling 12-month period. You book through oxford.gov.uk/bulky-waste, put the items out as instructed, and the crew collects on the scheduled day.
That's up to six large items a year gone for nothing, and if your situation fits, use it — we'd rather you kept your money than paid us to move a single fridge you could book in for free.
The scheme's honest limitations
- Item caps — three items per booking, two bookings a year. A house move or clearance blows past that instantly.
- Lead time — collections run on the council's schedule, not yours; free services attract demand, so book well ahead and expect to wait for a slot.
- Kerbside only — items must be placed outside at the collection point. The crew won't come into the house, up flights of stairs or through a shared building.
- Standalone items only — it's a bulky item service, not a clearance: no bagged general waste, no mixed piles, no renovation waste.
Council or private? A straight answer
Use Oxford City Council's free bulky collection for up to three standalone items that you can move to the kerb and don't need gone urgently. Pay for a private collection when the volume passes the caps, the items are still indoors, the deadline is fixed, or the waste is mixed. Combining both routes is often cheapest.

Use the council when: you have one to three standard items (sofa, mattress, appliance), they can wait for the next available slot, and you can get them to the kerb yourself. That describes a lot of jobs, and the right price for them is now £0.
Use a private collection when: the volume exceeds the caps (a whole room or house — see house clearance), the items are still inside and you can't shift them, the deadline is real (tenancy handover, house sale, skip-less renovation), it's mixed general or garden waste, or you've already used your two free bookings.
